31 Flavors of Pi(e) is an inaugural NFT collection of minimalist, abstract geometric “paintings” and avatars celebrating everyone’s favorite irrational number – Pi; and most everyone’s (statistically) favorite pastry – Pie.
Each image in the collection is comprised of the first one million digits of Pi (in very tiny type), colored in the hue of a flavor of pie (Apple, Blueberry, Shoofly, etc.), with a translucent circle in the same hue, of random size and position, laid over the digits of Pi.
A million numbers is a lot of numbers, and from a distance the images appear as abstract, geometric paintings.
It is only as you move in closer to truly examine the piece, that you realize the seemingly simple shape+color work is rather complex – and grounded in the digits of Pi.
The intended themes of the piece are the macro vs. the micro, the infinite vs. the exact, the abstract vs. the concrete, and the mathematical relationship of the circle/Archimedes to the right angle/Pythagoras.
(And, yes – in addition to the obvious language plays of Pi and Pie – the 31 Flavors is a pop-culture riff on Baskin-Robbins. Sorry (unless, of course, you’re acquainted with the most tastely paradise of Pink Bubblegum – then you won’t mind).
